ART NEWPORT - CALL FOR ARTISTS

ART NEWPORT / MARCH 2025

REGISTER HERE: 

1. Theme and Scope

•       OPEN THEME
•       Mediums accepted: painting, sculpture, photography, digital art, mixed media, drawing, pastel, charcoal

2. Eligibility

•       Who can apply: the artist must be a student, professional, or emerging artist. Artists must be at least 16 years old. 
•       Number of submissions allowed per artist. Each artist can submit up to 5 jpegs of their work.

3. Artwork Specifications

•       Size restrictions: Works can be as small as 12" x 12" and up to 60" x 40". If larger works are preferred by the artist, please specify size/dimensions of each piece for consideration. 
•       Framing or presentation requirements: All work to be framed and/or ready to hang. No tape or push pins for presentation purposes. 
•       Originality: The work must usually be original and not a reproduction.
•       Copyright considerations: Ensure the work does not violate copyright or intellectual property laws.

4. Submission Process

•       Submission method: Online through our platform .........
•       File requirements for digital submissions: 6" on long side, format (JPEG, PNG, PDF), and 300 dpi resolution.
•       Entry fee: Members of the Newport Artists Collective - no fee, Non-members - $35.
•       Deadline for submission: Works can be submitted from October 1, 2024 - December 31, 2024.

5. Judging and Selection

        1.      Originality: Judges often look for unique and fresh ideas. They want to see something that stands out, either through concept, execution, or style.
        2.      Technical Skill: This refers to the artist’s proficiency in handling their medium. It could involve the accuracy of drawing, mastery of shading, understanding of color theory, brushwork, or sculptural technique, depending on the medium.
        3.      Composition: The arrangement of elements within the artwork should demonstrate an understanding of balance, movement, and focus. Judges often look for well-thought-out compositions that guide the viewer’s eye through the artwork.
        4.      Use of Medium: Judges often look at how effectively the artist uses their chosen medium, whether it’s oil paint, charcoal, sculpture, etc. They also consider how innovative or skilled the application is.
        5.      Creativity and Innovation: The ability to interpret a subject or concept in a creative way is highly valued. Judges will look for new ways of expressing ideas.
        6.      Emotional Impact: Great art often evokes emotion. Judges might assess how effectively the artwork connects with viewers on an emotional or intellectual level.
        7.      Theme Interpretation: If the competition has a theme, the work should clearly address it. The artist’s interpretation of the theme can also impact how the piece is evaluated.
        8.      Presentation: The work’s overall presentation, including framing, cleanliness, and how it’s displayed, can also influence judges. A professional finish reflects care and attention to detail.
        9.      Narrative or Message: Some works may be evaluated on the strength of their underlying message or narrative, particularly in conceptual art.

        10.     Impact and Memorability: An artwork that leaves a lasting impression, whether through its beauty, complexity, or emotional power, often scores higher. 
   

JURORS:

Rita Fucillo - editor, Art New England - A graduate of Boston’s Commonwealth School and Brandeis University, her experience includes theatrical general management, arts marketing and communications, public relations, co-producing and, most prominently, arts publishing. Rita is vice president of publishing for New Venture Media Group, publishers of Art New England magazine, Theatrebill, Panorama: The Official Guide to Boston, the New England edition of Playbill and numerous custom publishing titles serving the arts and cultural tourism. A Few Highlights: Co-presenting and overseeing the first Actors Equity production of Jonathan Larson’s RENT in Seoul, South Korea, starring original cast members Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal. Co-producing and general managing Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris, Boston, MA. Celebrating Art New England’s 40th Anniversary with a Gratitude Tour in 2019. Multiple guest speaker and panelist appearances, including Sotheby’s Institute of Art; TransCultural Exchange; American Women Artists; Boston International Fine Arts Show; Canvas Fine Arts—and every Art New England event (since 2009 when New Venture acquired the magazine).

Maura Lindsay - the owner of Trésor Estate Sales and an antiques and interior decoration aficionado - 20 years of experiences in the estate sales business, interior design and has critical knowledge in the identification, valuation, organization and selling of antique and vintage items. Maura Lindsay is dedicated to providing professional residential liquation services, conducting sales of personal property and entire estates. Maura’s goal is to make the selling of your lifetime treasures as friendly, transparent and discrete as possible.

Michelle May - Juniper Rag - Founded in 2020 by Payal Thiffault and Michelle May, our mission to elevate artists is driven in our ability to connect people. Art lovers and artists can connect through artists features, print and digital marketing campaigns, curated exhibitions, juried shows and many collaborative projects that we present annually. Juniper Rag also focuses on new and exciting technology that is evolving every day. Juniper Rag has built a strong reputation in presenting high-caliber art in all media by some of the region’s best emerging and mid-career artists, and we have juried, co-curated and curated some of the highest attending shows for our partners. Our commitment to local art in Massachusetts and New England means that all Juniper Rag artists will have a new audience here. Collaborations with CUSP Gallery, New Art Center in Newton, ARCK in Boston, Mechanics Hall in Worcester, Fountain Street Gallery in SoWA, The White Room, and Worcester Center for Crafts, and most recently, the Mayor’s Office of Art and Culture in Boston for The Fay Chandler Emerging Artists exhibition and more. We attended in Basel Miami, Scope and Untitled as well as Ignite Broward in Fort Lauderdale. We also attended CodaMade at Mad Arts in Dania Beach, Florida to gain insight into public art impacts and the landscape of digital art, Blockchain and the NFT landscape. Speakers included Refik Anadol and Cory Van Lew. We host 10-12 virtual and live exhibitions a year, curate for galleries partners, promote thousands of artists and cultural organizations we work with.  

Jennifer Okumura - attended Syracuse University and received her M.F.A. from Boston University. She has a strong comprehensive knowledge of the Art Market, Modern and Contemporary Art, with diverse and extensive Fine Art experiences as a former FPAC Board of Directors, an Operations Manager, Fine Art Consultant, Design Associate, and Adjunct Educator at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, coFounder of Art Advising Group Invoke Contemporary with Diana Stelin the Founding member of DTR Modern, and currently sits on the board as President and founding Exhibition Chair for National Association of Women Artists, Inc. MA chapter, and Arck Artist Ambassador.

6. Exhibition Details

•       Exhibition dates: March 28, 2025 - March 30, 2025
•       Venue: Newport Harbor Island Resort, Newport, RI
•       Shipping and handling: All Artists are responsible for shipping and insurance to and from ART NEWPORT

7. Sales and Commissions

•       Pricing your work: Guidelines on pricing submitted pieces if they are for sale.
•       ART NEWPORT commission: All art sales will be made through ART NEWPORT. 30% commission is to be paid to ART NEWPORT, 70% commission paid to artist. 
•       Payment processing: All payment processing is done through a cashier at ART NEWPORT
